School counselors are professionally trained and Virginia state certified professionals whose role is to identify and address student needs through the use of a comprehensive school counseling program geared towards student success. Our main goal is to advocate for our students and ensure that they each have a successful middle school experience. We work with students individually and within the classroom setting to support and assist them with their academic, social/emotional, behavioral, and personal development. We also work collaboratively with students, parents, teachers, and other professionals in order to identify and minimize any barriers that stand in the way of student success. We specialize in post-secondary and transitioning planning. In addition, we serve as an important source of information, resources, and referrals.
Dr. Angela King (Guidance Director/8th Grade Counselor)
I am a certified PreK-12 school counselor for Chesapeake Public Schools. I have worked as a school counselor for the past 13 years. My first 4 years were spent as an elementary/middle school counselor for the Department of Defense Dependent’s Schools in Okinawa, Japan. After my move to Chesapeake, Virginia, I worked at the Intermediate and Elementary level. During this time, I completed my doctorate in Educational Leadership with a focus on school counseling and cyberbullying. I am currently a member of the American School Counselor Association and the Virginia School Counseling Association. The counseling department will ensure that every student at Indian River Middle School is provided access to a comprehensive school counseling program that will facilitate the development of their full intellectual, social, and emotional potential. Counselors work in conjunction with teachers, families, and the community to assist students in the development and achievement of immediate and future goals to maximize student achievement. In addition, counselors support a rigorous learning environment where all students can value learning, appreciate diversity and demonstrate responsible citizenship.
